Minimally Invasive Weight Loss Surgery: Less Pain, Faster Recovery

Our board-certified surgeon, Marc Zerey, MD, specializes in minimally invasive weight loss surgery. Performed laparoscopically, these techniques require just a few small incisions compared to traditional open surgery. For you, that may offer several benefits, including less pain and scarring, fewer complications, a shorter hospital stay and faster recovery.

Dr. Zerey’s weight loss surgical specialties include:

  • Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery: "Roux-en-Y” gastric bypass surgery is considered the gold standard surgery by the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). It involves making a thumb size pouch out of the stomach and connecting the intestines to the new, smaller stomach. The intestines are reconnected down-stream so that less nutrient absorption occurs.
  • Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy: This procedure involves stapling the stomach to create a vertical sleeve, which then empties into the small intestine. Approximately 75% of the stomach is removed, limiting caloric intake and promoting weight loss.
  • Laparoscopic Duodenal Switch: This procedure, reserved for the most severely, morbidly obese patients, results in more weight loss than other bariatric option. It works in two parts: first, a smaller, tubular stomach pouch is created by removing a portion of the stomach, similar to the sleeve gastrectomy; second, a large portion of the small intestine is bypassed.
  • Revisional Surgery: This procedure corrects complications and failures in previous weight loss surgeries. Approximately 10-25% of all bariatric patients require a revisional procedure due to weight regain, surgical complications or a device malfunction.
